Heger Organic Farms
During the winter months, the Imperial Valley in Southern California grows an estimated 80% of the vegetable supply for the USA and Canada. It is an impressive sight to behold, and made possible by the massive infrastructure projects of the 1920s and 1930s.
Heger Farms was the first organic farm in the region and today produces about 20 kinds of fruits and veggies. They manage around 3000 acres, of which 1000 is certified organic and in production. In the winter they grow a variety of vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower and kale. The spring crop includes melons and onions, which are better suited for the beaming hot sun and the growing conditions of the desert.
