How is everyone faring this week? We had an air quality warning over the weekend, but thankfully, it cleared up by Monday morning. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the hot weather was accompanied by a lovely breeze.
The end of last week and this week has been a bit quiet, with a few members away for working golf adventures and this week at the OPS conference in California. With Stefan at the helm of Discovery, we’re smoothly navigating through the week. Kelly, a member of the sales team and a kindred spirit, has been wonderful company. I met her way back when I started in the sorting department. She is zesty, caring, and always up for random conversations. Inspired by our colleagues, we both decided to take up golfing so we can join in on the fun. We even joked about “rage golfing” as a stress-relieving activity, with Kelly driving the golf cart wildly while I lob jumbo-sized marshmallows onto the fairway while no one is watching. Ahh, my kind of fun.
Here is Disco Sandwich in Strawberry Fields with our buyers, Brody Irvine and Carter Selmes-Blythe. In the middle is Alexis Martinez from JW Farms.
Let’s see what I have uncovered this week:
Frozen raspberries from Olera Farms
As I opened the box, a delightful aroma filled the air. Leaning in to take a photo, I couldn't help but envision Raspberry Charlotte Cake or a Danish filled with raspberry custard—mouthwatering possibilities!
Bulk blueberries from Warkentin Farms and Berry Brook Farms/Regehr Farms
You might wonder about the taste difference. Warkentin's berries boast a floral sweetness and a slightly firmer pop to the bite, while Berry Brook's offer a delightful blend of tartness and sweetness. Both are wonderful choices for your customers!
Choy sum from Lakeside
Gai lan from Lakeside
Choy sum is prized for its tender stems and delicate, slightly bitter leaves. When cooked, its stems provide a mild, sweet flavor akin to bok choy, while its leaves offer a subtle bitterness that adds depth to any dish.
Gai Lan, also known as Chinese broccoli, offers a unique blend of flavors: its long green stalks provide a sweet taste, while its dark, glossy leaves offer a slightly bitter and earthy flavor profile.
Ebony Rose pluots from Wild River
Pluots are a delightful hybrid fruit, combining the flavors of plums and apricots with a predominance of plum-like characteristics. The Ebony Rose variety stands out with its deep purple to black skin and crimson-colored flesh surrounding a small pit at its center.
Green cabbage from Secrest - product of BC
Goldenberries from Wild River
Spring shallots from Coke Farm
Spinach from Siri & Sons
It was far too hot to cook inside the house, so we BBQ'd Korean-style short ribs. The marinade included grated Asian pear or Asian pear juice, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, (optional) sugar or honey, black pepper, sesame oil, scallions, sesame seeds, and (optional) hot chiles. I asked my other half to cook the ribs while I steamed some green beans and bok choy. Before I could even heat up the pan, he returned and said, “The ribs are done!” I asked, “How are they done cooking already?” and he replied, “The grill was preheated by the glowing ball of fire emitting radiation.”
Thank you for reading along, and I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
