Hot Shots - April 26, 2024
Charmaine Yam

Hello All,

I hope you're all having a productive week. As we enter the final stretch of April, it seems we'll be experiencing spring showers for the next 7-10 days. Personally, I've always found rainfall to be very soothing and romantic. These rainy days provide the perfect excuse to cozy up indoors with a hot beverage, binge-watch our favorite shows, or perhaps heading outdoors to indulge in a mud pie creation. This weekend, I'll be wrapped up in a weighted blanket, nestled in my reading nook, absorbing cookbooks, and jotting down wild ideas as I listen to nature's playlist – "Raindrops in Spring 2024." With temperatures dropping below 10°C, I have decided to prepare something cozy and hassle-free: cabbage rolls!

Now, why cabbage rolls, you ask? Well, they're hearty, comforting, and versatile enough to accommodate whatever ingredients you have on hand – whether it's savory ground beef, tofu, tangy sauerkraut, or a mishmash of leftover veggies. And let's not forget about that glorious tomato sauce, adding a burst of flavor that's sure to brighten even the gloomiest of days. In this version, I used canned Marzano tomatoes.

As I devour these cabbage rolls, I've formed my own obscure opinion of where it all began: I believe nature created the first cabbage roll. There are insects that cocoon themselves in foliage, creating a self-rolled cabbage. However, before they can complete metamorphosis, they become a meal for birds, insectivorous mammals, and insect-eating insects. Nomnomnom cabbage rolls!

This week, the office has been bustling with activity as Discovery's prominent figures attend the CPMA trade show to represent the beating heart of all things Discovery Organics. The CPMA is the largest fresh produce event in the Canada, bringing together growers, shippers, retailers, and advocates to increase consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables while addressing supply chain challenges and fostering industry connections.

The photo on the bottom left features a Disco sandwich with our buyers Carter Selmes-Blythe and Brody Irvine, and in the middle is Rylie Selander from Anderson Organics. The photo on the right showcases, from left to right, our Sales Manager Vincent Wu, Sales Manager Lawrence, and Logistics Champion Newry Lee.

Meanwhile, back at the office, we let loose while listening to "Business Time" by Flight of the Conchords. Christian recited lyrics, Kelly danced, while I bobbed my head, belting out "a-chicka-chickow-ow-oww, it's business... It's Business Time!" Unfortunately, I don't have any photos to share of this moment but what a vibe! Can you feel that energy spreading? These are the small lights that brighten my days amidst the dynamic pace of work life at Discovery Organics.

Let's take a moment to see what I have discovered.

BC Red Bunched Radishes from Longview - available in 12CT and 24CT bunches

Bagged Bosc Pears from Stemilt

Fava Beans from Coke Farms- available in 5lb, 10lb, and 25lb options. Ask the sales team for splits!

Iceberg Lettuce from Earthbound

Cantaloupe from Llano

Honeydew from Divine Flavor

Have you tried a Muskadew? I do believe that my sister and I invented this wonderful beverage. Process melon into seed free cubes, freeze, blend frozen cubes into a smooth slush, pour into wine glasses and top with a cheap bottle of Moscato wine. Stir and enjoy!

You are welcome!

Meyer lemons from Coke Farm

Vine Tomatoes from Origino

Snap Peas from Tutti Frutti

I'm feeling energized after reading all your lovely comments from last week's post. Thank you, and please keep them coming. I would love to hear all your favorite things or challenges with fruits, vegetables, cooking and any thoughts or queries you may have the topic. Let's get messy and explore them together.

Maybe I'll go for a muddy adventure this weekend. After all, a little rain never hurt anyone – except maybe the Wicked Witch of the West. But last time I checked, we're not in Oz, so let's grab our rain boots and make a splash! Thank you for reading along. More chats next week.
