Produce Update-March 4 2015
Stefan: Rains in Culiacan, Mexico have curtailed the pepper and tomato production and the supply/demand on crops grown in Mexico is something to watch. With Florida and the rest of the southern states out of production for now it’s a “grab what you can when you can” purchasing deal.We still have a decent supply from our friends down south which hopefully will get us through this rough patch. Watch your retails on zukes and peppers. Cukes seem to be OK for now with Origino starting up and ready to go.Annie: I am going to hold my breath, and close my eyes, and when I open them there will be rhubarb and nettles and my other favourite spring edibles….well it sure feels like spring, but the chilly night air is delaying the start of the ‘wild things’. Watsonville strawberries arrive Thursday, blueberries continue for another 10 days, blackberries steady. Celery and broccoli prices may rise a bit as we transition from SoCal back to the Salinas area. Arugula, napa, baby bok are very tight for the coming week.Jodi: Forsythia’s are blooming, which means it’s time to prune your roses, at least here in the early springtime west coast. I’m thinking it’s going to be a good growing year this year. That said – roots and citrus. Same as last week! Good prices on big fruit right now though – if you want limes the size of oranges, and oranges the size of grapefruits – we got’em! Not to mention mangos galore. Give our sales folks a call to set up some kind of promos!
