Produce Update-February 4 2015
Stefan: California is lining up this weekend for a “Pineapple Express” which should help alleviate some of the drought conditions. The line of moisture goes basically from Hawaii direct to San Francisco and all the way up the coast to Prince Rupert. We had a chance to talk with Origino and it looks like they will be starting up with cucumbers in 3 weeks and tomatoes and peppers in about 6 weeks. We are still waiting to find out if the experiment at GBE to grow greenhouse beans this winter will work or not. Fingers crossed! Harker’s apple supply is still strong but there are a few varieties that are going to drop from our lists soon. Ambrosia are one of them so if you are wanting those for the future it would be best to stock up now.Annie: Strawberries continue to be limited and pricy, blackberries and blueberries are steady supply wise. Leafy greens of all kinds are loving the hint of spring like weather, and SoCal broccoli, cauli, brussels and cabbage are abundant and lovely. Baby Bok Choi, Napa and spinach are intermittent, but volume should increase over the next week. The new shipment of Ecocampos lettuce is crisp and clean, and pack weights are good, black kale bunches are large, and the Siberian Green kale (the juiciest one) just barely fits in the box.Jodi: I wish I had fun news to report, but alas. Slow trickling of new citrus things, a speed bump in us having awesome blood orange supplies (that speed bump being rain). As good news as rain is in the growing regions of California, it makes for delayed harvests for citrus. So here we wait. We’ve got really good supplies on spuds right now after getting our first PEI load of the year on Monday. Carrots supplies are tight allover until California production transitions further South (soon). And, after MUCH delay, we finally have bananas arriving on Friday as well as Peruvian mangos. So get ready, Tastebuds!
