Produce Update-February 25 2015

Stefan: Zucchini pricing is inching back up again and so are bell peppers. We are assuming this is due to the cold weather on the East coast of North America that reached all the way down to the Florida Keys. With Florida out of production for a bit everyone on the continent is counting on Mexico to help supply on key items. Origino is back on with Long English now and we will complete that transition by next week. Troy and Sara Harker are still packing Fujis and Spartans with everything else now in the boxes. Washington still has strong availability on most varieties so we will move there next. Now that the Westcoast Port lockout has wrapped up and the agreement is all but ratified we should see the first arrivals on Bartlett pears from Argentina on our doorstep soon.Annie: It is nearly March, we are still enjoying local storage crops-apples, bulk beets, sunchokes, onions, shallots, even a bit of squash.Strawberry prices are coming down, as Mexico, SoCal and Watsonville are all producing lovely fruit now. Blueberry and blackberry season continues for a few more weeks. Lovely California asparagus is arriving this weekend, loads of brussels sprouts, kales, chards and specialty bunch items, radishes...limited supplies on spinach and romaine, Napa is still short, and possible gapping on baby bok choi in the coming week. Broccoli and cauli and celery remain in great supply.Jodi: Somehow February is over already which just pushes us one month closer to the projected harvest for the first pixies – April 1st. With weather going the way it is on the westcoast though I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them before then. In the meantime, there’s a wealth of tasty citrus options in our cooler right now. Lots of tangerines, mandarins and all kinds of oranges. We could run ads if you’re into it – are you into it?!We’ll have fingerlings out there again later today. Fresh from Oregon and lookin’ oh so good. Just in time for this weirdly early BBQ weather we’re having!
