Produce Update-April 1 2015
Stefan: Well this weather has done wonders for the local growing season to start. It looks like Myers farm is ready to ship us their early lettuce, chards and kales tomorrow which is the best start ever for local lettuce. Oh wait that’s just an April fools joke. Gotcha! But there are local peppers coming from the Origino greenhouses starting today. These will be slow to start and we will complement with Fairtrade options from Mexico as best as possible. Lots of deals now on zucchini as the Mexican spring plantings are hitting their peak. We are carrying 2 Fairtrade lines of zucchini now both from farms that myself and Julie (our Fairtrade Manager) visited late last year. Divine Flavor is now able to provide us with almost an entire line of Fair Trade produce as they have just had their Ensenada operation approved and certified. Added to their Fair Trade line are their TOVs and their Mini Romas on the Vine.Jodi: There’s an inkling of news on the lime front! We’ll have some stock in later next week but it’ll cost a pretty penny. Growers are still recovering from hail damage, so the fruit that they are packing is priced similarly to gold. The navel season is slowly drawing to a close with Sundance finished first. Homegrown still has plenty of fruit, but you might want to get while the getting’s hot! Churchill’s pixies are still flowing in beautifully and oh-so-tasty. Carrots are continuing to be shy, cello packs are plentiful and, despite debagging needs, juice up quite nicely! We’re nearly out of Canadian spuds and will be getting Washington Yukons in this weekend, and reds early next week. Banana fingerlings are done for the season, but we still have some other fingerlings and babies in stock. The amarosas and French are beauties, and the pearls are just the cutest little flavor gems ever.Annie: Spring is truly here-broccoli is tight, lettuce is tight, but strawberries are in abundance! We are still gapping on Napa, Savoy and Baby Bok, but the gap should end by the weekend. Cali Asparagus is totally lovely, Brussels Sprouts coming in clean from all shippers, Agrofrescos Celery is crisp, green and tasty.
