MARKET REPORT - OCT. 28TH, 2016
A little short one todayThe transition south from BC has begun, as has the transition from coastal to desert California. We have no indication of any major hiccup, just choppiness predicted on the conventional side. Weather is always the determining factor. Mexican operations are opening up their entire selection this week and next, with a full array of tomatoes, cukes, melons, zucchini etc. Prices are seasonal and stable. Thanks for putting up with our Fair Trade avocado gap – we have lots and lots of beautiful product in stock now, and keeping our fingers crossed the rest of the season will go smoothly.Pears are now going to start to transition south with little supply left in B.C. Washington has huge volumes and specific controlled atmosphere storage for pears – something not available to local growers. We’ve added pomegranates to our growing line-up of Rebel products – some stores are reporting really good interest in this program, and it continues to get great press – featured again this week on CBC. We think there’s enough of a range now, from apples to onions to do a nice display. No room? Just sneak an end cap from the grocery department. Most of this product is just fine without constant cooling for a couple of days.Strawberries? What the heck is up on this – basically non-stop rain in southern California has done the crop in for the week. With 3 more weather systems aimed their way and another 3-5cm of rain in the forecast, this won’t recover for 10 days because anything with colour has to get discarded into juice quality – it won’t survive any travel. Then we should be OK. Mexico is not ready yet – although weather in Zamora etc. has been perfect for a few weeks. Most BC green veg growers are winding up over the next 10 days – lettuces are already moving south.
