MARKET REPORT - AUG. 19TH, 2016

Our REBEL FOOD listings have increased again with phenomenal success !066 Hot weather continues to push what was a slow start to the BC fruit and ground crop season into a much higher gear with some growers having to take time off pack lines in order to get out in the fields and orchards to harvest. The wetter July and about average highs have push fruit sizes to much larger than usual. Another factor is thinning which regularly happens. After last year’s 3 month heat wave everyone anticipated the same heat again this year so many thinned orchard fruit heavier than usual. With prolonged heat, fruit tends not to size up as much as the trees production is all about maintaining stability and life. So last year’s crop ended up being a lot smaller in size than usual. The thinking this year was that we might get the same heat so many folks thinned their fruit so what was left would size up better. But surprise we had lots of rain and average heat days and now we have folks like Troy Harker trying to order up tray packs for apples that will pack out at a 36ct size in a regular apple case. Our REBEL FOOD listings have increased again with phenomenal success on the fruit options so far. We have added pears and nectarines to the program which is now in its own section at the top of our list. The lemon harvest in Mexico has begun and we should see better volumes to add to the meagre options from California currently. Prices are expected to remain high for a couple weeks until more ranches come online. BC grapes are ripening fast with this weather and we start up with Coronations and will dovetail into Himrod from Secrest Farm and Venus grapes from Sundance Farm. Grab tomatoes from us this week as we have pretty much everything on special from Sundance Fields and Romas to Origino Beef and grape cherries to the Harkers amazingly beautiful Heirloom cherry pack. Lots of Corn incoming from our friends at Two EEs Farm, Secrest and Longview. This may be the best corn we have tasted in a good long while. Bartletts are coming in over the weekend with Red and Green from Sundance Farm in Cawston. Once again fruit is shaping up to be large! Small sizes will be hit and miss for the first few picks so if you are planning specials look for big apples to build those displays. Myers Farm are strong on bunch beets and baby bok as well as black kale and all 3 lettuces. Check with our stellar sales folks if you want to run an AD on any of these items and we can certainly work something out.
